[Vwdiesel] Fw: remove bad diesel

Why is this fuel bad Jeremy? I've started and used old diesel tractors where the diesel was 20 years old. It was fine. They aren't nearly the precision of a bosch Ve pump, but it's not
Here, it gets really cold, so algae can't flourish in a fuel tank at the water-fuel interface, but I've had to fix this in some trucks I've obtained from warm climates.
Couple years is nothing as far as diesel goes. Gasoline is a different matter entirely. Unless it's premium, it's garbage in 3 months of summer, especially stored in a plastic non-airtight container. sealed and steel is better.
if algae was your issue, it's filterable, couple paint strainers and some cheesecloth should be sufficient.
If you are concerned, I'd add it back to the tank a gallon pre fill after filtering, with some stanadyne cetane improver, and a couple ounces of 2 stroke oil.
To clean fuel lines, I'd just blow them out with a air compressor, which also gives you a visual of how open the lines are.
To refill and purge, the fast and dirty way is to reconnect to the tank, put some fuel in the tank, and stick your air blowgun, preferably regulated to 10 psi, through a sponge rubber ball, and hold it against the tank fill hole. blow, and it pushes fuel to the filter body, through the filter, to the loosened pump connection. this is really better if you have a friend to run the blowgun, while you catch fuel in a jam can, then reconnect the fuel line under the hood when the air bubbles stop and straight fuel runs. Never mind the return line, it doesn't need to be full of fuel, just open to drain back to tank.
If algae is the issue, take your empty tank to a car wash with a rain suit, and clean with hot soapy water. Let dry, then reinstall. steel tanks can be steam cleaned, but the car wash thing works really well unless you have a hot water pressure washer.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Fw: remove bad diesel
I finally got my 81 caddy started after all these months. It turned out the couple year old diesel in the tank is bad preventing it from starting/running. So now i need to get rid of a half tank of bad fuel in the tank. This is the first time I am doing this so I have few questions.I've disconnected the fuel lines by the tank to drain it. How do I remove fuel in the input and return lines that have upside down U shape to trap the fuel in them? Afterwards, how do i get the fuel in them without air trap in them? Do i need to flush the tank or lines with something? Is there any place I can dump the bad diesel legally or better yet is there a way i can treat it with something so it could be usable again? thanks.Jeremy
