Shalyn:

This is exactly what my wife's car is.   We have had it since late
summer of '02 (one of the first MkIV wagons off the boat to Canada -
ordered many months before).  We have constantly discussed and come to
the conclusion there simply is no car that can replace it.

Great choice - still very easy to support and modify (actually
aftermarket is even better now than 10 years ago)

I took the last couple days off work and feel pretty good now. Thanks to
the various people who've expressed their concern.

While I was off, I looked for cars. The chintzy rental was great
motivation. Looked at two today. Hard to find good TDI's now. I suspect
that great disturbance in the force I felt was the Death Star blowing up
VW's emissions fraud. So, I looked at a BMW 328d. Nice enough car, but I
remembered how much I hate automatics. Twice the engine power on paper,
but it felt gelded. I would be very curious to hear if others have driven
one & what they thought. Also, no spare tire at all.

Then I drove an '03 Jetta wagon 5 speed. I was so happy I almost cried. I
know it is a rebound relationship but I don't care. $6000 for a car with
250k mi seems like a lot, but it has a fresh belt, clutch kit, and
injection pump seals. The body and interior are in really good shape.
Hopefully I can push -this- one to 500k.

I'll call to arrange the buy in the morning.
Now I'll definitely have to keep my car's drivetrain. Somewhere.....
