[Vwdiesel] alt springs/shocks for MK4 Golf?

hi gang

wondering if there are any more-common springs or shocks you can swap in 
for OEM/VW?

my old Golf is a workhorse that I use mostly for hauling anchors and 
boat stuff around locally (250k+ miles)

if anything, I want it higher/stiffer/stronger than stock (without 
busting through the chassis)

any GM or similar American steel parts I can swap in?
