Late and not following exactly... I had one issue of not fitting right. Turned out the spacer bar was flipped and swapped from side to side. Once I got it on the right side, facing the right way, it worked.

I laid out my new parts and tried them w/o springs. I discovered that the handbrake lever has an offset toward the back plate. On the shoes being replaced, the offset is about half way to the cable end of the lever. On the new shoes, the offset is near the top of the handbrake lever (near connecting pin) where it interferes with the push bar. The push bar will not sit horizontal because of the curve of the offset. The curve of the offset rubs on the push bar and makes it "roll forward" toward the brake drum. Has anyone experienced this before?
