The owner's manual states that you must use the special VW/Audi
mineral hydraulic oil, and the local Audi service technician
also strongly advised not to use standard power steering fluid.
I don't know what the difference is, or whether standard power
steering fluid would harm the system, but I wouldn't risk any
damage and just heed those words. The factory-approved fluid
is available from the dealer for about $15. Although not
cheap, it shouldn't need replacing often (unless you have a leak,
in which case you should get that taken care of).
