Hydra pump

I have an 85 5000S which is in need of a hydraulic pump. A new pump
costs about $450 in Canada so I am thinking about rebuilding the old
one. The Bently manual has outlined this proceedure using VW tools.
My questions are:

1) Is it worth rebuilding the pump? Has the original model of the
   pump been supplanted?

2) Can I perform the rebuild using "regular" tools?

3) Does the rebuild kit contain a new pressure valve? And if the pump
   shaft is scored do I really have change the whole pump?

Also, rebuilt pumps are available for about $300 plus core charge. I
want a reliable solution but only plan to keep the car for another year.
