Strange burnt smell...

Hi y'all!

Sometimes, when I drive my '90 Coupe Quattro first thing in the
morning, I can smell a burnt firecracker or explosive!? kinda smell
coming from the outside of the car... I can only smell it when I step
outside. But I can't quite identify the source (exhaust or rear wheels
etc..) I can only observe it first thing in the morning and not
all mornings. Maybe 3 or 4 times... A related observation - the
exhaust note is a bit different - slightly louder and not too pleasing
to hear.

Can someone diagnose this problem?
