FWIW:  
The problem was a small crack in the overflow reservoir.  Not 
only was fluid very slowly and inconspicuously leaking from
the side, but internal coolant pressure was also reduced.  (I
just didn't realize that Audi pressurized this tank because
so many car makers don't.)  The higher temperature readings 
came as a result of loosing pressure (and proper circulation) 
in the cooling system.  The tank was easily replaced and all 
is well... no leaks and temperature has returned to normal.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.  The only draw back was
the Audi dealer soaked me $55.00 (part only).
