Re: 4000 Quattro Turbo
Reply to: RE>>4000 Quattro Turbo
Allow me to jump in, since we went from an '87 4000Q to a '90 Coupe Quattro
just last December. Compared to the 4000Q, the coupe is much better equipped,
more sophisticated technically, better performing, and better looking. It is
also much smaller inside, and has less practicality. Getting into the back
seats is tough for adults, and there is less interior storage (glove box,
underdash cubbyholes, etc.). The hatchback is nice, and useful although
narrow. The doors are very long and heavy, and won't stay open when parked on
an uphill incline (OUCH!!!). The stock sound system is far superior to the
4000Q's, although it uses that dorky VW rubber-duckie rooftop antenna. The
coupe's sort of a slug off the line, but has a decent top-end kick (all those
20 valves a-breathin'). It's really got that autobahn gearing, though, so
don't expect a screamer. Yes, torsen, and yes, ABS, and less torquesteer than
the 4000Q. Handles much better, but a lot of that is probably due to bigger
rubber. Leather and wood and 3-piece alloys and power windows, roof, mirrors,
memory seats, rear wiper, headlite washers, yadda yadda. Decent value for $18k
with 9000 miles and 2 years all-expenses paid warranty remaining. Now you'd
find one for about $17k with 25-30k miles. They only brought them in for '90
and '91, and they listed for $30-35k. '91s are the same except better clutch
feel and a glass sunroof...

Yes, that is the automobile I originally desired, but the wife doesn't
like how it looks. I thought I could install a turbo for a few thousand
dollars, but as Ti has pointed out there is alot more to it than first
seems. Alas, this will be cost prohibitive.
>...too bad they don't import them anymore...
I thought they brought them in for '90-'91 with the 20 valve head, but
without a turbo.
>a torsen, abs and 20 valve equipped example wouldn't be too bad..
Is this the '90-'91 Coupe Quattro?
>no servotronic-s2 for me!!!
Isn't that the european version of the Coupe Quattro with the turbo
and 20 valve head? Sounds pretty exciting to me. Is the servotronic
power steering your only complaint?
If my memory serves me correctly the original Quattro doesn't have a
Torsen center differential. Is that true? Doesn't the Torsen-Gleason
differentials make it possible to have full time ABS?
