Noisy lifters

Just because you have hydraulic lifters, don't rule out the possibility
that they are bad. I had to replace the hydraulic lifters in my '85
Coupe GT last year because a few were bad. Cost $210 for 10 lifters
(cheapest place locally, & I needed them ASAP, Porsche-Audi Parts I
believe carries them at $14 each) and a Sat. mornings worth of work.
I don't remember where, but I read that the way to tell if a lifter
is bad is to push down on it. If it doesn't compress at all then it
is probably bad (I had about 4 of these).
After I replaced the lifters I also switched to Mobil 1. Now they quiet
down within 2secs of starting, much better than before.
Now if I can only find out what that knocking sound is....
