RE: 5000 Steering Boxes

Since it's the current topic...

I've got an '85 5000S with 115K miles and it's ORIGINAL steering rack is about
to go. From what I've heard, getting this much mileage from a rack is very
unusual. 

1) Does anyone know if and when the design was updated? 
2) Is it worth it to do the repair on a car with this many miles?
3) Can I do the replacement myself?
4) When the thing finally fails, will I get stranded, and will the PS pump get
wasted from running dry?
