What your suggesting is a different comparison.

The cars being compared are an 87 5000S quattro to an 87 5000cs(turbo)
quattro. In the San Francisco bay area I've seen 87 5000cs(turbo)
quattros from 8 to 10K which is about the same as the non-turbo version.
I've driven both and I felt a big difference in acceleration.

The 4000's and the 80/90's are a different story. I have a 4000 and
have contemplated replacing the complete engine assembly with one out
of a wrecked 5000turbo. I agree that more HP in the smaller body style
would be nice.
The cost of the 88 and later Quattro's. are in a different price
range than your 86 4000s Quattro, but than if the 86's were faster they
would probably cost more too. :)
