And rightly so, as anyone who speaks French will tell you (and I will) --
'couper' means "to cut" in French. 'Coupe' with an accent aigu (slanted to
the right) is pronounced the same as 'couper' (i.e. koopay). The 
Americanization of the latter leaves us with 'coupe'.
