Yes, it was, but not while the high-compression engine was used in an Audi car.

Actually, that message we're replying to first appeared in rec.autos a few
weeks ago, and I replied to it at that time, pointed out some of the errors in
it, such as the location of model numbers and the fact that VW had purchased
Audi from Daimler-Benz years before the 100 made its debut (therefore making 
it a strange notion that the 100 was positioned below the Mercedes cars by
Audi (strange = incorrect)).
