AudiWatch Update (Tm) #17
AudiWatch Update #17 published 7-12-93
GOLF TEES OFF, AW May 17th
VW finally has launched the Golf and Jetta III, though ONLY San Diego-
area dealers get the cars as '93 models. They likely won't be
available elsewhere until July as '94 models.
A VW spokesman explained that the company had to offer a certain number
of "clean" emission vehicles (damn big gummint agin, Ed.) under CA regs
and that the new Golf/Jetta figured into the mix VW promised to sell
during the '93 model year. You may not have to travel west to get a '93,
though: New York adopted (too bad, Ed.) CA standards and may get some
'93s, too.
LOPEZ'S PLANT, AW June 28th
Volkswagen AG chairman Ferdinand Piech confirmed that the company will
build a lean production plant in Inaki Lopez's Basque region of Spain.
The goal is to produce a car in 13 man-hours instead of the currect 19.
Word is that a new "people's" car, based on the Chico concept (AW, Feb. 1)
shown st the Frankfurt show, will be built at the plant.
CORRECTONS, AW June 28th
Our "Audi Agonistes" story in the June issue cited an outdated figure of
341 for the number of Audi dealers; there are 299 dealers.
