AudiWatch Update (Tm) #18

AudiWatch Update #18 7-16-93

WORLD NEWS, AW 5-31-93

Even as the reports come in that Germany's luxury automakers are
scrambling to produce small, entry level vehicles be decade's end,
word arrives of the NEXT-GENERATION AUDI V8.
Codenamed D2, the new V8--due early next year--will have an all-alloy
body. So even though the D2 is more than six inches longer and two inches
wider than the current V8, it is said to be more than 150 pounds lighter
than today's car, which comes in at an even 4000 pounds.
Noname has been chosen, but 300 is being bandied about in Europe. Audi
will produce 15,000 to 20,000 units annually and the sedan may spawn a
flagship coupe.

LOPEZ UNDER FIRE, AW 5-31-93

As Audi gears up for the new V8, parent company VW AG will have its hands
full as well: GM has filed a criminal complaint against J. Ignacio Lopez,
VW's recent and controversial hire (AW, March 22). GM is alleging that Lopez
took secret documents with him when he left. GM officials wouldn't discuss
the charges, and wouldn't say exactly when the charges were filed.

VW IN JAPAN, AW 6-7-93

VW AG may open a DESIGN STUDIO IN JAPAN.
No specific location has been announced, but the company is said
to be far along in the planning stages and the studio likely will
serve all four automakers in the VW group.

AUDI PLANS, AW 6-7-93

Last week we reported on the upcoming aluminum V8 from Audi, dubbed D2.
But D2, which will be unveiled at the Frankfurt show, is just the first
of SEVEN NEW MODELS Audi will introduce in the next four-and-a-half years.
Other modules in the company pipeline include a face-lifted 100, due
next year, a new 80, also due late next year or early in '95, a smallish
hatchback (called the 50) and an all-new 100, both due to arrive in 1997,
and finally, a new sedan in 1998 (tentatively called 200), which will
slot in between the 100 and the V8.
The European market will benefit from an Audi/Porsche joint venture
wagon project called RS2. Available in the first quarter of 1994, the
RS2 will have an ALL-ALUMINUM TURBOCHARGED FOUR-VALVE 300HP FIVE-CYLINDER
WITH FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE. It will be sold in Audi dealerships but will have
some Porsche badging on it.
And remember the W12 engine in the Avus concept car? It will be shown
again at the Toyko Motor Show this fall but in another car, not the Avus
nor the Spyder.
Audi's decision on whether to build a factory in NA will wait until the
final ratification of the NAFTA, which should happen by year's end.

SOME INTESTING QUOTES FROM AN ARTICLE ON BUGATTI: AW 6-7-93
Says Mauro Forghieri, Bugatti Chief Engineer, and past engineer from
both Ferrari and Lamborghini, "with the Ferrari 408 in 1985, I showed
a new way to design exotic cars, not only with the use of 4WD, now
offered in production on the EB 110 and Lamborghini Diablo VT....."

"The idea of having a 4WD sports sedan fits my idea of a modern,
high-performance car. Four-wheel-drive traction doesn't mean not
only more safety, but a more refined, more precise way of driving.
I think the essence of fast driving is to simply drive really fast,
not a continuous struggle with huge amounts of power." ( :) Ed. )
