At least in 1986, gas struts were stock on 5000 turbo's and CS quattro's.

I replaced my OEM struts with Koni hydraulics, and I didn't like the ride (for
everyday use).  I recently put Boge TS gas struts in, and I like them *alot*. I
had them all last winter here in New England (-22F at one point), and I can't
say I notice any major change in handling characteristics in the winter (other
than I use the seat heaters every day).

As far as I can tell, 5000 front ends were made for gas shocks.
