AudiWatch Update (Tm) #21

AudiWatch Update #21 PUBLISHED Aug. 31, 1993

_Sports Car_, September '93

SOLO SCENE, pg 71-72

BAYSIDE TOUR, Boston MA, July 10-11th
-------------------------------------

The Bayside National Yokohama Solo II Tour was held on the parking lot
of the Bayside Exposition Center in Boston, right on the edge of Boston
harbor. One hundred and seventy entrants stood with their backs to the
water watching the close competition, while facing into a very welcome
breeze in the 100-degree humid weather. (100-degrees is an understatement,
and *what* breeze? Ed.).....

....H Stock was unquestionably the closest battle of the weekend. After
Saturday's competition, the first four drivers were only about three
tenths apart in the three-trophy class, with Brian Reeves leading
Glen Powell. On Sunday, Powell opted to watch the Good Ol' Boys run
at NHIS, (NASCAR at New Hampshire International Raceway, and Davey
Allison's last race, Ed.) allowing Tina Reeves to claim second, only
0.022sec behind her husband..... ("I couldah been a contendah", but
in light of it all, going to NHIS was the right decision, Ed.)

PRO RALLY--SPECIAL STAGE, pg 78-80
-----------------------------------

Subaru PRO Rally Championship: Round 4
Prescott, Ariz., July 30-Aug 1

....Overall rally favorite--undefeated including a record-setting
performance several weeks before at Mt. Washington--Paul Choiniere was
working feverishly with his Libra Racing team during the parc expose'
to install a new turbo in his Audi Quattro S-2.
Choiniere and Becker had blown their turbo during a test session the
day before, and had no spare. They found an Audi 5000 turbo at a local
junkyard, but the turbo didn't really fit. Choiniere showed up four
minutes late to get his starting time. The defending champs were not
off to a good start.....Merrill had totalled his $200,000 racer several
weeks before at Pike's Peak.....so they borrowed Bruno Kriebich's
reliable Audi Quattro.....Both Choiniere and DiMarco were having turbo
ill's. Choiniere's car arrived at the service are after SS2 with its
replacement turbo running "too fast," but the crew couldn't do much
about it because the turbo controls were not compatible.....DiMarco
had s slight lead over Choiniere, partially due to Choiniere's 40sec
penalty for his late start.....Choiniere's turbo was still running too
fast, but Choiniere now had tools to adjust the boost on-course......
Choiniere and Becker were able to baby their Audi S-2, street turbo and
all, to it's fifth straight victory (including Buffum's victory at
Wild West and Choiniere's Mt. Washington win). (see competition section
below for official results and times, Ed.)

Special PRO Rally Event
Mt. Washington Hillclimb, Gorham NH, June 25-27
-----------------------------------------------

Mount Washington's Climb to the Clouds takes place on the challenging
(much more so vs. Pike's Peak, Ed.) 7.4-mile roadway up the side of
New England's highest peak. If features both dirt and paved hairpins,
jumps and dramatic dropoffs. (a *MAJOR* understatement!, Ed.) Last year,
Frank Sprongle stunned crowd by racing up the mountain in seven minutes
and 8.92sec, (in an Audi Quattro, Ed.) but Paul Choiniere shattered
that record this year in his '92 Audi S-2 with a time of 6:46:62.....
Carl Merril came to the mountain this year with....his new Ford Escort
Cosworth.....the weather for this hillclimb event was perfect.....
Running the cars in reverse qualifying order placed Merrill and
Choiniere on the mountain at the same time. Neither knew how fast he
would need to go to win, so they drove all out. Both finished under the
seven minute mark, but Choiniere beat Merrill by a second and a half.
It was still anybody's race!.....Choiniere was on a roll. Every turn he
drove was perfect and he was clearly faster on the straights. With all
the runs completed, Choiniere had climbed the hill in 6:46:62, nearly
a full minute faster than Tim O'Niels record run of just four years ago.
Merrill finished 12sec behind Choiniere in second, while Bruno Kreibich's
Audi Quattro followed in third. (see competition section below for offical
times and results, Ed.)

_Auto Week_, August 16,1993

WORLD NEWS THIS WEEK, pg 3
--------------------------

All eyes are on Wolfsburg, Germany, last week as the world awaited
the fate of Ignaacio Lopez after the VW AG board met in an emergency
session.
The Result? The boaard came out in unconditional support of Lopez
However, the company also admitted that GM employees who leeft to go
to VW may have brought documents with them, but said they were
destroyed immediately. The VW board said it is convinced Lopez took
no dcouments from GM when he left (see page 18), but added that some
papers in the possession of former GM employees were shredded once
discovered.
Needless to say, GM has seized on this admission, saying it's just
VW finally admitting that documents were stolen and that legal action
should be taken.

COVER STORY, pg 16-18
---------------------
VW's MANANA IS NOW
The rest of the world has made VW's Golf III and Jetta III a best seller--
but will America take to these Made-in-Mexico late-comers?
(BIG article, Ed.)

GM-VW war intensifies, pg 18
----------------------------
desperation of both companies shows
(picture of Lopez smiling, Ed.) caption:
After signing on with VW, Lopez continued to attend GM product strategy
meetings.
(large article, excerpts follow, Ed.)

...GM declared war on VW back in March.....through Aug the battle rages
on.....the ugliness has reached the point that the chairmen of two of
the worlds industrial largest corps proposed to sit down together.....
GM's Jack Smith substitued Opel pres. Dave Hermann.....infuriated Piech.....
escalation in the battle.....German prosecutors say they have the evidence
....open warfare.....German financial community involved when VW stock
prices fell....key stockholders call for a meeting with Piech.....
Helmut Kohl.....many expected Lopez fired.....Piech himself may be on
the street.....Piech met with board.....declared war on GM.....the whole
affair is unprecendented and comes at a time of desperation for the two
huge corps....both suffered dramatic downturns in business.....weakened
by inefficiencies.....long since taken off the gloves fighting everyone
....unions, other car makers, TV networks. Second, the battle has
become one of survival.

DISLIKES
Problems came in flavor of the month
Mouse-powered passive belts are a curse (no sh_t!, Ed.)

VR6 engine is the passport to pleasure in Corrado SLC. For all its
road-gobbling entertainment value, this VW is surprisingly utilitarian.
Unfortunately, a steady parade of problems put a damper on the fun.

US NEWS & WORLD REPORT, AUG 20, 1993

OUTLOOK--PEOPLE
---------------

JOSE IGNACIO LOPEZ DE ARRIOTURA left his vice president's job at GM
in March to become the top cost cutter at troubled car maker VW.
But instead of plaudits, Lopez has brought VW scandal. Last week a
German court ruled that the magazine Der Spiegel had sufficient
cause to legally accuse Lopez of stealing four boxes of secret
GM documents, including plans for a new GM car and its marketing
strategy. Lopez, who could be fired, is also being investigated
by German and American authorities for corporate espionage.
