I've seen this problem EVERYWHERE.  My wife had the same accident
several years back and she wasn't wearing her seatbelt.  Her head hit the
windshield and she was very lucky (now she wears her belt no matter what).
 
If I'm in a position where I can't cross the intersection and an oncoming car 
is making a left I always use hand signals to give the turner an OK to turn.
People are usually thankful and I see less accidents.

Wow, it sounds like it should have at that speed.

Sounds good to me.  Its good to hear that your wife is OK.
