Souping up my '83 5S!

I don't know if this topic has been covered before (if so could someone
direct me to the relevant archives) but I'm interested in increasing the
performance of my '83 5S coupe.
For those who don't know its technical specs, it's a carb'ed 2.0L auto
(85kw)... My friend suggests replacing the carb/manifold and cam plus
the tyres (two need replacement anyway)... Can any of you comment on
these modifications (suggested parts, caveats, etc) - or add your own?
