One thing to look at would be the seals on the brake caliper pistons.
These seals are designed to provide a very weak non-return force (to
keep the pads lightly riding on the rotors), but when they age, they
can swell and press too hard.
I would doubt that the ABS unit is a problem; it does not actually
generate any pressure (its just a set of three position valves), and
if it failed in the "HOLD" valve position, you would experience
greatly diminished brake performance.
