Jos,

My '89 200T does the same thing on occasion, usually on cool humid mornings.
Sometimes it does the lines like you described, other times it's more of
a checkerboard pattern.  Invariably, the problem goes away after the car
interior warms up.  The only solution recommended by Audi is to replace the
instrument cluster (or maybe the computer only, I can't remember) so I'm
living with it.
