odometer cable

The odometer on my '86 4000CSQ just stopped working at 123k last
week. I checked the back of the instrument cluster to see if it was
still attached and it was. After further investigation I found that
the black thingy that locks the cable to the back of the cluster had
broke, allowing a spring to come out, thus not keeping the cable tight
against the mount. I bought the car used at 83k, so I wonder if a former
owner(s) had previously messed with the cable. Anyway I assume the fix
to this is a new/used cable with a good connector. Is routing the cable
through the firewall a simple task? Also what is the procedure for
 diconnecting it from the transmission?
