I've used the following method for 4 years with no problems (a fellow
Audi enthusist showed me this). Just drive down to the local car wash
with a can of engine degreaser (I use the "GUNK" brand). Turn engine
off and spray engine with the entire can. Turn engine on and idle for
2 or 3 minutes. Leave engine running and rinse off the degreaser. Use
the high pressure water for tough engine block grime and just regular
  pressure everywhere else.

I've never had a problem with the electronics or distributor. A friend
of mine had a problem cleaning his RX-7 engine. He forgot to run his
engine while rinsing and had to wait a while for his engine to dry out.
