Peter, I replaced the driverside front door handle last time. I first
tried not to remove the inner panel but found it too difficult. In fact,
it took only 10 min to take off the inner panel and another 10 min to
put it back. However, in this way, you have plenty of room to work
on the lock and have a good look at how it works. 
After I had this done, someone on this list suggested one way to
replace the lock without removing inner panel but I'm lucky enough
not to have to try it.
