I'm not sure about the advice to evacuate before recharging.....
If there is still some pressure in the system there should be no air in the
system, so adding some R-12 should be OK without evacuation. The system
could only be contaminated if the pressure has dropped to or near zero,
in which case you might want to evacuate the system. I've had much
success with recharging even when the system was opened up, to replace
a faulty condensor, etc, without evacuation. I would do the evacuation
if I had the HW to do it, but only on totally dischared systems.
WARNING: this is based on experience, NOT professional A/C training!
