I suggest looking into Borla exhausts. Leistritz (original manufacturer)
makes sport mufflers for VW. Don't know if they have any for Audis. The
Leistritz factory on my 5000S lasted over 6 years. It was stainless steel
and does cost around $400 for the mid-resonator and muffler. I paid $180
dealer price for the mid-resonator. It should last a long while. 
The Ansa muffler I got was just $100 but it is mild steel. It was put in
April and is showing rust coloring around the joints and the outlet. Ansa
makes good stuff but mild steel does not quite cut it here in mid-state NY.
