I have frequently replaced air filter on 4000S 1987 4-cylinder with A/C. It is messy pulling and tugging but I do it with an extra pair of helping hands.  
So far the fuel lines above do not seem worse.  Plus I reason that I must
be more tender than some mechanic on the clock!   While I curse at Audi
for the tough air filter, I praise them for the oil filter and pan bolt which
only took 5 minutes last nite!
