   While I have never had this problem with my 4000CS 4 cylinder, I have seen
 this problem on an old Ford LTD II 6 cylinder I had as a winter beater.  
 The problem was a cracked head or blown gasket.  Given the nature of the car
 I tried these mystery pelets that are inserted into the rediator as a fix
 that might get me through the winter and it worked.  I would only suggest this 
 as a last resort.  As for how long it lasted I can say that for me it was
 2 months before I sold the thing and it worked when I sold it to a friend
 with a shorter commute and spare time on his hands if he wanted to tinker
 with it
