Hmm -- I had exactly the same symptoms on my '85 Volvo 740 turbodiesel
(which I really liked, by the way), and the general consensus of
the Volvo mailing list was that my engine suffered from excessive
blow-by (scored cylinder walls, worn/broken piston rings):
for some reason, my mechanic claimed that there was no
easy way to confirm this on diesels. I used to get lousy mileage,
but I never felt any loss of power (hey, it made 108 HP!).

I rebuilt the turbo with a new cartridge from Turbo City, thinking
the bearings had bitten the dust and were leaking oil, but that wasn't
the problem. I had the oil delivery and return hoses replaced, also
in vain. I finally sold the car because a lot of people told me that
these symptoms were a common death-rattle among diesel Volvos.

Maybe I should be watching the intake hose on my 5000 ST also ...
