I had the lifter tick tick problem too.  I tried everything.  Finally, I
replaced the lifters. It worked.  After 100K with the new lifters, they are
still quiet. The new lifters are better.  It's the ONLY thing that works...

Also, valve seal rot is a fairly common problem on older Audi engines.  My
mechanic says he's replaced many on older Audi's with good results. Seems it's
a function of age as well as miles.  I'm *thinking* of doing it to my car...
