Re: Onomatopoeias - was: Source for lifters/valves?

OK, I just came from the dealer - need to get parts for my
sister's Jetta, and I asked the Audi service manager, who has
been very helpful in the past. He says that lifters rarely
go bad and that it is usually one of 3 things:

- distributor
- vacuum pump
- lifters

I think I'll see if I can borrow a stethoscope and pinpoint the
noise. Or, I may bring it in and get his opinion.
He says it's usually the vacuum pump - there is a rod inside that
wears, and that is what produces the noise. They don't usually
fail he says, but just get louder and louder.

The noise I hear sounds like a louder version of my Jetta in the
morning - ie lifters. But even when warm, occasionally I will
still hear it, intermittently. It sounds like a metal-hitting-
metal noise.

Maybe I'll record it and create a .au file and stick it on
swiss so you can enjoy it too :).
