i guess audi is aware of the problem.. in the v8 (spare no expense) engine,
there is a secondary oil reservoir higher up near the heads,  so that there
is oil supply for the lifters immediately at startup.. needless to say this
engine doesn't have any of the symptoms.  i used to have a vw fox with the
1.8 liter 4 banger.. also did do a clack-clack-clack with thick oil..
