Steve...
        It's probably the proportioning valve located under the master
cylinder.  This valve will leak a litttle brake fluid out & a lot of air
in.  It WILL drive you nuts.  One of those parts that didn't work on the
100 (70's vintage) so of course they used it on the new model.  Breathe
in... breathe out ... then buy it.
        Don't know about the pads.  Sounds like they are for solid rotors
(you should have vented) so they are too thick.
