Geez, I hope I didn't accidently start-up the acceleration monster 
again!  As I recall it was in '86 or '87.  The thing to remember here is 
that in the marketplace negative attitudes about products can linger long 
after the source of the problem has past, even if the orginal problem was 
bogus.  Indeed, why hasn't VW of Amer/Audi been more agressive?  As I 
suggested earlier, at a corporate level, I don't think they understand 
product positioning (my 2 cents).
