I have a hard time seeing how the 4 could be a better match for
the car. I tell my wife all the time "I love the engine in this
car ('88 90) but I'd love to put it in my car (86 GLI)." These
cars are so darn heavy that you'd have to keep the RPMs way up
to get any power, I bet. Just speculating. Definitely cheaper
to maintain though, if my Jetta is any comparision.

Are you talking about the 2.3l 5cyl, or another 4 cyl?
My understanding is that the 2.3l 10v 5cyl is a non-interference
engine, while the 20v motor is.
