Electrical problems
About four months ago I bought an '86 5000CST and have been very happy with it.
However, recently several electrical problems have popped up.
-- Power to the radio will flash on and off when the radiator fan turns on.
Also, if the headlights are on, they will dim for a second. This is the
most annoying of the problems since the radio will turn off and on several
times durong a 15 min. drive. I'm thinking it may be a weak battery but
it is a fairly new one and there has not been any problem cranking the
engine.
-- When the A/C is turned off, it will sometimes still blow hot air. The fan
will vary from high to low randomly. Also, when on auto or any other
setting, the a/c will blow cold then get gradually hotter. If I turn it
off for a while, the next time I run it, it works fine. This sounds like
the compressor but I know nothing about air conditioning systems.
-- Lastly, I recently replaced the window switches ($10 ea. used) and on
occasion, the driver side auto-down won't work The switch has to be held
to completely roll down the window. This is really no big deal, but I'm
wondering if this may be a symptom of a larger problem.
Just to clarify, the last two items are intermittent problems, and the first
occurs any time the car is driven long enough to turn on the radiator fan.
It is possible that all of these problems are related to a weak battery. I'm
going to check it tomorrow, weather permitting.
I'm an on and off reader of the list so I apologize if these topics have
been covered recently. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
