The mechanic who did mine said the belts rarely break unless they get oily.
So you are
probably Ok.
Nevertheless, even if the belt breaks without any engine damage, the repair
bill could be rather nasty.
Lets say you are 50 miles from home. It will cost you a bit to get the car
home. Or maybe
you'll take a chance with a local mechanic? Finding one with the right
tools will be hard. And thats
not to mention the aggravation, personal transportation costs, and possible
interference with
your work that might ensue.
I loosened the cover and looked at the belt regularly when my mileage got
up. Then I
had it done when I could get a reasonable price (after I'd satisfied myself
that the tools were
too pricey to do it myself).
