For what it's worth, on the Golf I used to own, I used a 65 glycol/35 water
mix. It seemed to keep the temperature gauge noticably lower than a 50/50
mix. I used distilled water, presumably to keep potentially corrosive
tap water minerals out of the loop. I don't have any "German" anecdotal
experience with this over the long term, but on the Oldsmobile (350 V8) I
had before the Golf, the radiator lasted about 125,000 miles without any
complete flush-and-fills.
