    The original quattro system was only designed to work with a manual
    gearbox - there was a hollow transfer shaft inside the gearbox to take
    power to the centre differential, and it wasn't possible to make this
    work with an automatic. 

    On the V8, introduced in 1991 (?) they redesigned the system to allow
    it to work with automatics - this is also now available on the 100
    quattro, but not on the 80.
