Couple of things come to mind that you can check out.
1. The valve that allows hot coolant to enter the heater is not operating
2. The flap that regulates air temp by mixing the hot/cold air is stuck in
the cold position, not allowing air to flow thru the heater
I am not too sure about the heating system in your 85 5000; my familiarity
is with the '86 - 88 5000. I presume you have the AC-Delco electronic climate
control system. The heater valve should be in the engine compartment close
to the firewall just below and left of the cylindrical hydraulic fluid
reservoir. It is operated by vacuum. Look for a thin plastic (about 3 mm dia)
vacuum line going to the valve. Make sure the line is connected and not
clogged. See if the valve is opening when the heat is turned on.
The air mix flap is driven by a servo motor. You should be able to hear it
whirring when you change the temp setting from LO to HI. Its possible that
the motor is bad or its connection to the flap is stuck.
Hope this helps.
