the vr6 engine is one really good reason to buy the jetta over the 90.
since you are not considering the quattro model, you are leaving out
audi's most special feature.  also i expect the vw's steering to be
better, unless audi has changed the servotronic for this year.

it is also true that vw's have been slightly corrupted by the whims of
the american market.. eagle ga's, flaccid shocks and cupholders.
fortunately these are quite easily remedied.

the current 90 has a rear suspension that does a good job but incurs
a heavy weight penalty.

all the jettas look really ugly to me.. the new passat is slightly
underpowered for its size and weight, but looks better.

if it was me making the decision it would be quite easy for me to
decide on the jetta, taking into account the lower price and the vr6.
the ugly looks well, i'll just grit my teeth.  fortunately there's the
much better looking golf which would be what i'd really get.  i don't
find the current 90 series particularly attractive engineering wise as
well as looks and i know some of you will find this upsetting, but these
are only my 2 cents.
