R and Replace interior shift cover

Help --

I am trying to replace the piece of plastic that covers the shift mechanisim 
in my 86 5000 (auto-trans).  I have to remove the shift handle and I am 
wondering about the best way to do it. It there a way to remove the grip
--That is the part you grip when you shift gears--or do I have to dissassmble
the mechanisim attached to the floor pan.  It appears that there is a small 
hole underneath grip that could possibly be for a drift pin or something
like it.  Before I make a fool of myself I'd thought I'd ask the group
if they had any insight in to this.  

Or is there a better way to do this besides paying $65/hour to the dealer.
