Corroded relay contacts, maybe? Or intermittently bad relay.

The other night my wife came home and about 15 minutes
later we were going out. The 90 wouldn't start, and the GLI was
in the garage with no exhaust. I checked for spark - got it.
Pulled a plug - dry. The fuel pump ran, fuel was getting to the
fuel distributor, but not to the cylinders. I happened to
stumble upon the black membrane that is over the air filter -
you know, the one I removed to ease the air filter replacement
a couple of months ago :). I guess it had no vacuum, and so it
wouldn't start. I reatttached it and the clamp that holds it in
place (tighter this time!) and away we went.
