Dan,
I've never found the cooling to be inadequate or even marginal on the
ur-Quattros, or 4000Qs for that matter. I've been running my '85 ur
without the auxiliary radiator for many years with absolutely no problems
at all. I think that auxiliary radiator is really a bit of serious
overkill, for environments like So Cal where the ambient might hit over
100 degrees F and you spend a lot of time in stop-and-go "freeway"
traffic with the airco on for hours. Never been a problem here in NE for
sure, even on 100 F days with the airco running.
I have seen an ur-Quattro Pro Rally car with a 5000-type intercooler
installed in front where the auxiliary radiator would normally be. This
requires some hacking/cutting. I couldn't go this way on my '85! Someday,
perhaps, I'll locate a used unit that installs in the stock location, one
of the 50% larger types availabel from _Europart_ for like $1800 US. BTW,
the stock intercooler is relatively efficient and a decent size, 13-rows
I think and rather thick. You will need considerably higher boost to
really take advantage of an even larger intercooler. Go for it! :)
