Thanks to all those who offered input on what  the source of the drivetrain 
noise might be on my TQC.

Right now the TQC work is on hold, I have other home improvement projects 
which are ahead of it in the queue.

The consensus of the "mysterious noise" is that the throw-out bearing is the 
culprit. One person mentioned that it might be the starter not retracting 
fully. When I get some more time, I will look into it further. At this point 
the car is parked, until I can dig into it.

As for the motor update, I am passing on the engine I checked out a month or 
so ago. It isn't worth the money the guy was asking knowing the block had a 
chunk out of it. I have found a dismantler here in Denver which usually has 
Audi engines, both turbo and normal, sitting on a shelf waiting for a new 
home. I am going to check into these further.
