The 4000 rpm cutout is also caused by a bad intake air temp sensor. Here the
computer is limiting engine speed because it is getting bad data from this
sensor and can't look up the correct boost/timing numbers. My 83 TQC had
also shown this problem. I ohmed out the wiring and cleaned the connection
to the air temp sensor and it has been working fine ever since. On some cars
the wires are soldered to the air temp sensor contacts.
For the two flywheel sensors, one counts flywheel teeth and the other
detects flywheel rotation via a metal pin. These are used together with the
Hall sensor in the distributor to varify engine timing. The Hall sensor is
only used at engine startup. After the engine is running you can unplug it
and the engine will continue to run.
The workings and debug information of the ignition system is described in
two factory manuals, "quattro : introductory factory service training
information" and "quattro : maintainance and adjustments manual".
