It may well be that the valves don't interfere with each other - but this is 
surely quite normal on a single-camshaft engine.  Losing the belt on a single-
cam engine can never cause the valves to interfere, since the position they 
adopt has to be a valid position defined by the cam.  What happens on a 20-
valve engine when the camshafts are out of sync with each other and the 
crankshaft doesn't bear thinking about.
 
The danger is valve-piston interference, a horse of a different colour.  As I 
said here almost a month ago, Audi Germany actually mailed me a timing belt for 
my 2.2 ur-quattro turbo MB engine and asked me to get it fitted locally.  They 
mentioned 90,000 kilometres in their letter.
