I had the same problem a year ago on my 85 Audi 5000. Looked like
everything was free and clear. The problem is the glue. After a long
period the weather stripping that seals the space between the heater
housing blower motor and the car body holds the two together very
effectively!
I just got mean with it and it came loose.
Of course if you get mean with it and you forgot something, then you just
have to fix that too!
Regarding the motor itself, mine had a circlip on the end, very difficult
to see, but that is after you get the assembly out a ways.
Good Luck!
