The 4000Qs and ur-Quattros have transaxle and diff plugs located right on
the cases. The lower plug is the drain and the upper plug is the fill.
The fill plug is at approximately the correct height such that filling
the unit to the specified capacity should result in the level being about
that of the lower edge of the fill hole. I use a small oil-change pump to
fill the cases as squirting thick gear oil into the small fill hole is
not very efficient. Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil works great, especially in
cold climates. One mechanic I know of suggests replacing the gear oil
evey 15,000 miles if using regular Dinosaur Oil (Tm). I think 30-50,000
miles is just fine if using synthetic gear oil.
Hint: be sure you can get the fill plug out before removing the drain
plug!
